Welcome

Printed and manuscript maps in Yale University had been divided between the Map Room in Sterling Memorial Library and the Beinacke Rare Book & Manuscript Library from 1963 when the Beinecke Library opened.  In 2017, the Map Room in Sterling was closed and the collection largely moved to the Beinecke Library.  The move makes it convenient for readers to consult most of the historical collection in one location.

Yale has one of the most significant cartographic collections in North America.  A sense of its depth can be felt by browsing through its key holdings.

If you have questions about the map holdings, please contact Margit Kaye, who worked in the Map Room in Sterling before coming to Beinecke Library with the collections, or George Miles, who specializes in American Maps, Kevin Repp, who specializes in post-1800 maps or Ray Clemens, who specializes in pre-1600 maps.
